They did it entirely through social networking. One of the founders wrote a Python script that sent out custom emails to a list they had developed. The emails were so tailored, that many merchants called back to thank them for the personal attention. 20k from StartEngine, and a lot of sweat equity from the founders.

The best form of this right now is email, and even then, that's through a one-size-fits-all email. That was a rocket ride as well, and that took us to a top 10 website, and NBC took an equity steak in the company. That's currently very ineffective. I then moved on to Infoseek, which at the time was just a search engine.

Ensure your business name is available on a wide variety of social networking websites in order to develop consistent branding ( KnowEm ). Create and manage your social media presence. Set up your computer and network. Pick an internal email system ( Gmail , Outlook ). Clarify who gets equity , and how much.
