An outage at Amazon Web Services is causing major downtime across the cloud this morning, as sites which rely on the cloud storage service have been unable to reliably connect all morning. Although Amazon's web services are widely used by Southern California tech startups, it's unclear how many are being affected by the downtime.

I believe that this is a major new area of growth & innovation for the Internet as Cloud Services start to form deeper & richer layers. You can think of even your PC as a stack in which the hardware manufacturers handled physical layers, Microsoft handled the OS layer and application companies built higher up in the stack.

Carlsbad-based Epics3 , a new startup focused on photo sharing through Twitter, Facebook, and other web sites, said today that it has launched its services. I will argue that when the dust settles, although we will have fewer firms, each type well end up more focused on traditional stage segments that cater to the core competencies of that firm.
