By now you probably know that David Sacks , co-founder of PayPal and founder of both Geni & Yammer made some observations on Facebook that Silicon Valley “as we know it” was coming to an end. We once thought Microsoft was a monopoly on the Internet due to IE. Where David is Totally Right. As I point out in my video.

It’s always fun debating companies with Dana because she’s always so knowledgeable on deals – particularly those in the digital media, ad-tech and eCommerce spaces. The “private sale” market phenomenon was started in France by Vente-Privee (literally means “private sale”) and was replicated in Germany by BrandsforFriends.

But more broadly it got me thinking to one of the biggest mistakes tech executives get into in the first place. Many other great companies are not. -

I’m looking for somebody who can sell, but not better than our head of sales. You do a startup and decide you want somebody to step in and run the company so you can focus on technical excellence. You want somebody who can raise $15 million to build out your R&D, business development and sales organizations.

The new entrant keeps margins low but suddenly has a lot of profits due to large volumes of business. In order to grow we hired successful and expensive sales people who in turn were able to (and incentivized to) sell projects at higher margins and close big deals. How does the incumbent respond? This was a mistake. All deflationary.
