In 2007, Sarah joined Current TV. in 2007 (and) 2008 (and I realized) there is all this online video being consumed and it''s not being consumed on Current. these guys, even in 2007, had tens of millions of views. Now my company is 28-employees, we closed a round of three million dollars in May (2012).

If 2011 & 2012 look like 2010 then the current crop of angel investors will look great. My thesis on why this is happening is that large tech companies didn’t invest enough in R&D between 2008-2010 (Google even went through layoffs!!!) So where are we now? It’s hard to say.

We started in Boulder, Colorado, all the way back in 2007, with just ten companies. That worked well enough, we did another class in 2008 with another 10 companies, and in 2009 we expanded to Boston. One could argue that in 2010, 2011, and 2012, that growth was in the video and entertainment area.

If you imagine that they did most of their initial investments between 2002-2007 then it’s been 3 years of mostly doing follow-on investments in those old deals. Also, since most funds are 10-year funds there will be pressure in 2012 for this fund to start exiting its investments and return money to its shareholders.

The total number of M&A deals in the US this year is projected to be a paltry 225 transactions relative to more than 450 deals just 2 years ago, which was the norm between 2002-2007, varying only by around 3% per year. More interestingly Montgomery expect the M&A market to grow to 600 in 2011 and 750 in 2012.
