Fliptop: Shining A New Light On The RSS Feed

Tech Zulu Event

The RSS feed subscription idea has been around for quite some time now, however for some reason never really caught on with the general public. Chances are because they need to then use another service like Google Reader to keep track of the RSS and end up getting information they are not generally interested in. Fliptop aims to change that. Flitop is a new content subscription service that offers a simple way to subscribe to a website's content.

First, A Primer: Portals, RSS, Feed Readers & Delicious - When the web started we needed directories to find information and thus Yahoo! Then came RSS ( Really Simple Syndication ) widely credited to Dave Winer for driving the spec & adoption. The idea was that websites (think news, blogs) could push out a regular “feed&# in an open, XML format that could be read by an RSS Reader otherwise known as a feed aggregator. Some Thoughts on Twitter as a Micro-Blogging Tool

Both Sides of the Table

1/ Twitter started off positioned as a micro-blogging platform but in the end became more of an RSS reader. Planning a threaded Tweetstorm? Here’s the rules: 1/Tweet 2/Reply to 1st Tweet but remove your @name 3/Reply to 2nd Tweet not 1st 4/Repeat. Mark Suster (@msuster) May 29, 2015. I learned the hard way by doing a Tweetstorm below but linked every subsequent Tweet back to the original Tweet to create the thread. I faced the wrath of the community.

How Many Times Should You Tweet Your Blog Post?

Both Sides of the Table

I’ve argued previously that Twitter is a new form of curated RSS and in many ways it is. But it is a transient RSS reader. I think this is important – otherwise your Twitter feed just becomes, literally, an RSS reader. Last September I was on a panel with Guy Kawasaki talking about Twitter. He said at the time that he Tweeted 4 times for every story that he wrote. FOUR TIMES! The exact same Tweet. I couldn’t believe it.
