Southern California has seen a surge in accelerators and incubators looking to spawn new startups in the region. The challenge for those manufacturers is providing a software platform for those devices to run on for the consumers. We are charging a platform license fee so they can distribute that application with their devices.

How are you different from other startup incubators, etc? It's not entirely exclusive, however.

SocialEngine is a white-label, community platform. It's a casual setupit's not an incubator, it's not an accelerator, and we're not charging anyone for space. I was really into graphic design in high school, and took several summer workshops at Caltech. Alex Benzer: I'm actually building two startups.

I then became and EIR at UC San Diego, and joined EvoNexus, the not-for-profit incubator run by the Irvine Company. So, despite their rivalries and silos, people have come together, and we now have all 5 UC campuses in Southern California, plus Caltech, Harvey Mudd, USC, UC San Diego, and others involved.

We are creating a platform that enables users to play instant games and apps directly on the computer desktop. In some ways it is similar to early stage incubators such as Y Combinator, although FI is even earlier stage, focusing on developing the founders themselves as entrepreneurs as opposed to actual companies.
