The problem with one of those is, as a venue, you can build a beautiful website, and click to buy tickets--and you're on a completely different, branded site. I always ask the question, when I've brought a concert ticket, if I'm going to get an email from the venue, or from a Ticketmaster or Live Nation. How is the company backed?

Ethan had pointed out to me that merchants were being barraged by “deal site” wanting to drive customers in the door but they didn’t have great tools to manage their customers. I think it’s a beautifully designed site and product. I told him that this had been a big theme for me for some time.

If you look at the articles on a site like CNN, and the 650 opinions you see after every article, your eyes just start to go crossed. The owners of a news site or blog can then install our plugins on their site, via all six lines of Javacript. We have about 50 political sites using the tool already.

The city has, however, quietly been home to some of the most successful online companies to date, including CitySearch (sold to Ticketmaster for $260 million in 1998), Overture (acquired by Yahoo for $2 billion in 2003), eHarmony and LowerMyBills (bought by Experian for $330 million in 2005). Okay, thats AdSense. 10 years ago.

From there, you will generally see a pop-up dialog similar to the following (this one is from CitySearch): Once you click Connect, the original site now knows that I’m Tony Karrer from Facebook and the various demographic and friend information from Facebook. You come back to a site you’ve used before.
