In my consulting work, when I ask team members in startups and small businesses how they know whether they are doing a good job, the typical response I get is “Nobody has yelled at me today,” or “No news is good news.” A little competition for results is always a good thing. Encourage them to do more of the same.

Leaders who share key aspects of the business openly, bad news as well as good news, to everyone, garner more trust. Show humility while acting as a mentor and coach. Communicate clearly and often on business issues. High-trust leaders see themselves as stewards, rather than owners, guiding people, assets, and decision making.
