Treat a startup as a customer, not a client. A client relationship suggests that the consultant is in charge, whereas the customer designation recognizes the more modern model of the customer in control. It also highlights all aspects of required customer service, satisfaction, loyalty and referrals to peers.

The functions of an early-stage board are pretty obvious and well understood: Providing introductions to customers, biz dev partners, recruits, the press, other investors, etc. Reviewing financial & operational performance. Offering a sparring-partner function on strategic decisions. Mentorship. As You Start to Mature.

It is never as rewarding when you’re the coach (but coaching has many other benefits. There are other great VC’s in SoCal and there is always the allure of the NorCal guys flying down and talking about how they invested in Google, Facebook, Yahoo! Ask your customer why you lost. I will embrace my losses.

Our interview this morning is with Jonathan Zweig , the CEO of Los Angeles-based AppOnboard (www.apponboard.com), which has created software which allows mobile app developers--and in particular, mobile game developers--to create demos of those games which can be played without having to download and install those apps.

It is never as rewarding when you’re the coach (but coaching has many other benefits ;-). Two weeks after winning the deal and well into implementation planning we released a new version of our software. How could a company like ours be so callous as not to support their software (even one more than 4 years out of date)?

Teams reconvened Saturday morning at 9:00 AM and continued to code and build their startup throughout the day. Tyler Crowley, of Sqweal, Launch, ThisWeekInStartups, Open Angel Forum, and Mahalo, stopped by to give a quick coaching session on pitch prep. By 10:00 PM, teams were working away into the night. What a SWLA.
