The incubator-- Greenwings Biomedical (www.greenwingsbiomedical.com), is led by Richard Koffler , a serial entrepreneur and angel investor in Los Angeles. Do you provide funding for companies?

We have significant VC commitments (listed below) – every entering company will get $50,000 in funding, mentorship from top VCs and successful entrepreneurs plus free office space. Of these 19 have received funding (10 have received significant amounts of VC funding) and 5 have been acquired (2 for more than $30 million).

We build and invest in startups with impact. We have a Startup Studio and Early Stage Investment Fund. A good friend, and college athletics coach, very wisely said to me “you can’t fill a big hole with a bunch of little things.” We call it TinkerBarn Ventures. Doing good is good business! It’s going to take a village!

Amazon in turn led to the formation of an earlier stage of venture capital now led by what I call “micro VCs&# who typically invest $250-500k in companies rather than the $5-7 million that VCs used to invest. Some have moved into later stage investments in an effort to “put logos on their websites.&#

Recently I heard a talk by Dave McClure, a long-time angel investor, who also proclaims to be one of the “new breed” of venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, as CEO of 500Startups , which is either a micro-VC seed fund, or a startup incubator, or both. Incremental investment may follow. Series-seed round. Early-stage startup.

and I thought if we brought the community together for common purpose we could create more of a sense of community to help new entrepreneurs get funded, assemble teams, raise profiles and help with biz dev, product, etc. Companies were getting funded more easily and many more companies were actually being created. So we went for it.
