I recently hosted a panel at the Twiistup Conference about LA tech companies. I have some pretty specific thoughts on the differences between companies in the two cities, as I wrote about in my previous post A Tale of Two Tech Cities. This was evident at the Twiistup pre-event company pitch last week at UCLA. Francisco Dao came up with the idea of letting 10 companies that weren’t selected for Twiistup to do a presentation the night before to a group of people and let the audience pick one company to win the final slot at Twiistup.

I think we've done some of the really exciting companies in LA, including most recently Clicker, Machinima, BUZZmedia, and SVnetwork. A lot of people don't know it, but we also have an early growth fund, Redpoint Omega, which also gives us the flexibility to invest as little as $50,000 in a company, which we do quite often.

Several teams disassembled themselves, joining other teams as well as one new company surfaced off in the corner with no one seeming to notice. We ended up winning Startup Weekend LA (Nov 2009) and launching Ming.ly, soon being invited to present at the LA Twiistup conference a month later.
