A number of teams have recently been looking to turn that vision into reality, as a result of the Qualcomm Tricorder Prize , a $10M competition being run by the X Prize Foundation to create a real life Tricorder. That''s essentially how the Tricoder competition was formed--it''s time for this to happen. It was announced in the 90''s.

Last week, Los Angeles-based Stroome (www.stroome.com), a new startup originally spawned out of a project at the USC Annenberg School of Communications, won $200,000 in the 2010 Knight News Challenge. Tom Grasty: Essentially, we started off as a graduate school project at USC. A few months later, we won the USC New Venture Competition.

For example, Lookout is a mobile security company that was founded by three talented graduates of USC. That’s our great gain as Snapchat has also raised a lot of money at a monster valuation ($10 billion reported) and has been scooping up talented Stanford engineers and relocating them to LA. But we still need more funds.

Our continuing relationship with USC is precious in that regard. We've been able to harvest lots of scientific advances from Kevin Knight (editor's note: founder and Chief Scientist, and a researcher at USC's Information Sciences Institute), which we've been able to include in our business.

We have world-class universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and more. There is no region in the country that comes close to having the sheer number of angels & VCs that Silicon Valley has as well as the dollars that flow into the region (40% of all dollars, PwC Moneytree report ). Funding is different outside of Silicon Valley.

I read reports this week that when he was unhappy with some actions of his players he sent in an emissary to deal with them because he didn’t have the time or patience to deal with the drama that comes from having talented, high-paid professionals with opinions (as opposed to college players who have little choice).
