For today's interview, we spoke to Dave Eastman, the Director of the Viterbi Startup Garage, a startup incubator that is run by the University of Southern California, out of its location in Marina Del Rey. How are you different from other startup incubators, etc? It's not entirely exclusive, however.

Thibault Mathieu: Morgan and I were both in film school at UCLA. We were initially covering events like sports and arts festivals when we first launched a beta version of the WESAWIT app at UCLA. We were also really happy when we first launched our beta at UCLA. TB: Well we went to UCLA and loved the weather here!

Almost all of the finalists were MBAs (Stanford x2, Wharton, Harvard x2, MIT, UCLA). I took an advanced computer course in high school where I learned to build databases in Ashton Tate’s dBase III+ and to compile my designs using a product called Clipper. It’s either part of the DNA or it’s not.

In some ways it is similar to early stage incubators such as Y Combinator, although FI is even earlier stage, focusing on developing the founders themselves as entrepreneurs as opposed to actual companies.
