I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. That’s why Roger Smith puts the focus of the CTO on programming for the earliest stage.

We all like to think of startups as “non hierarchic&# organizations and to some extent that should be true. I never built a Google-sized business but I did build an organization from scratch that grew to 120 employees in 5 countries before we sold it. I’m not a big believer in too much hierarchy.

Parenting has always required a village of support, and we consider our platform to be that village. I started as a teenager, and I did babysitting, life guarding, and swim coaching. So, we moved forward from there, and organically grew, creating a boutique agency. We're focused on lifestyle insurance for parents.

Anyone who reads this blog frequently will know that I am a big believer in low-cost video content and specifically the power of YouTube as a content creation & distribution platform. Another major hire was Ryan Lissack who joined as CTO. Ynon started as shareholder, board member & advisor and switches to full-time executive.

We''re taking that content, and publishing it on our licensing platform, which is much like a Getty Images for video. going to put it on their channel on Youtube, or maybe their website platform. I began as an advisor, and then started spending a week, then two, then three. Those licensing fees can be pretty amazing.
