I recently received an email from a former student in which he described how he was able to secure a lunch meeting with a high-profile entrepreneur who is operating multiple ventures in parallel. Benedikt Scholz is an exceptional student whom I had the pleasure of instructing when he recently studied at UC Santa Barbara.

Social networking at it’s finest… I’m sitting at a local brewery watching football with my wife and friends a month back and I get an email from someone who had just visited my Meetup.com site. I never imagined the Food Network would find me there. Not sure of the air date, but I will post when I know.

They did it entirely through social networking. inLife signed up dozens of merchants in Santa Barbara for their activity site. One of the founders wrote a Python script that sent out custom emails to a list they had developed. No wonder they just raised $1mm.

Whenever I’m trying out new restaurants I always feel compelled to check Zagat & Yelp and then STILL email friends to ask their POV on my top 3-4 choices. A few years ago I planned an outing to Santa Barbara for my Dad’s 70th birthday. Our social networks are filled with our friends, sure.
