Recently I wrote a post arguing to make the definition of a Startup more inclusive than that to which Silicon Valley, fueled by Venture Capital return profiles, would sometimes like to attach to the word. Most of what I think about startup communities came from mentorship by Brad Feld through hours of private discussion and debate.

These entrepreneurs do not risk everything, work outrageous hours and put themselves under extreme pressure because they want to. It is not rational to put oneself into the uncertain, stress-filled environment of a startup. Entrepreneurs want to matter. “It is difficult to see the picture when you are inside the frame.”.

One of my favorite events last year was attending Startup Grind where I got to interview Clayton Christensen, author of The Innovator’s Dilemma. And of course we talked about many of my views of building startups. My mom was an entrepreneur – she was kind of my inspiration for entrepreneurship. It was all technical.
