Irvine-based BlueCava , a developer of a cross-screen advertising platform, said Thursday that it has raised $13M in a new funding round. According to the company, the second round of funding came from S3 Ventures, Performance Edge Partners and Zeitgeist Capital.

Seed investments are down by any measure (funds, deals, dollars) over the past 3 years in deals < $1 million AND in deals between $1–5 million. As you can see below the number of seed funds shot up dramatically between 2006 and 2014. It’s very noticeable in terms of funds raised, dollars invested and deals completed.

Nirvanix had last raised funding in May of 2012, when it took $25M in funding from such backers as Khosla Ventures, Valhalla Partners, Intel Capital, Mission Ventures and Windward Ventures. Nirvanix had started life as a competitor to Amazon S3, but in recent years had shifted its focus to supplying cloud storage to enterprises.

The trend of funding anything from the first $25k to funding $50 million at a billion+ valuation is unlikely to last as the skills and style to be effective at all stages are diverse enough to warrant focus. I will argue that LPs who invest in VC funds will also need to adjust a bit as well.
