Hawthorne-based SpaceX , the commercial spaceflight and rocket developer headed by tech mogul Elon Musk, is getting set today to break ground on a new launchpad at Vandenberg Air Force Base. SpaceX says it is investing $30M in a new launch pad at the base, north of Santa Barbara, as a place to launch its upcoming Falcon Heavy rocket.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX , the developer of commercial space rockets and space vehicles, has signed on its first commercial contract for its Falcon Heavy, with Intelsat , the satellite communications firm, the two said this morning. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX , the commercial rocket firm headed by technology mogul Elon Musk, is announcing this morning new plans to create a "Falcon Heavy" rocket, able to lift twice the payload of the Delta IV Heavy into orbit. SpaceX said that the Falcon Heavy will be able to lift up to 53 metric tons (117,000 lb) into low earth orbit.
