Our major designer was the number two guy on the Lucent 5E development program, so we understand how to design scalability into telecom apps, and scale seamlessly, better than our competitors. The reverse also happens--if one of our users wants to call Skype users, they can do that purely on the net, without using the PSTN.

The value of patents and trademarks is not certifiable, especially if you are only at the provisional stage. NewCo has filed a patent on one of their software tool algorithms, which is very positive, and puts them several steps ahead of others who may be venturing into the same area. NewCo doesn’t have any of these yet.

LA is the largest metropolitan area in the US for people employed in art, design and media and the local creative economy of LA generates more than $140 billion in economic output – more than the GDP of many countries.

There are dozens of sources to help you construct your business model, and a good example is a classic book by venture capital investor Elizabeth Edwards, simply named “ Startup ,” which is really designed as a handbook for launching a company for less. Investors look for a sustainable competitive advantage, like a patent.

We were contemplating one of the problems we had all faced, which was when we designed a project, the issue was that it usually never got done on time. Angels have lost lots of net worth because of the stock market meltdown, so we've kept it small, and plan to keep it small--at most three to five people at the most by the end of the year.
