Use the fact that you were on an anointed list to build credibility when you eventually approach journalists (and VC’s, customers, employees). Imagine if you had to release your software daily in order to keep your job or to have the traffic numbers you need to earn your paycheck. They see journalists as a means to and end.

Adam Miller transformed his company into one of the world’s leading software-as-a-service companies, specifically in the HR world. Even though their business model was tweaked a little while ago to give customers additional leniency, the business is still expecting to break $100 million in revenue this year, up from $25 million in 2010.

If you were a newly minted, venture-backed consumer Internet company you had to have a deal with AOL to reach your customers. Was it massively better software, better companies, better markets?
