I would argue that the shut-down of September 2009 was equally severe yet there are signs that this “VC Ice Age” has begun to thaw. It helped me avoid chasing deals (and a house) in 2007/08 and it led to GRP’s fastest pace of investment in many years in the first three quarters of 2009 at a time when many others weren’t investing.

I recently read the book eBoys about the founding of Benchmark Capital and the founding of eBay. In the book they profile how VC worked in the early days (60s / 70s). I joined GRP Partners in 2007 before they raised their current fund (we closed a $200 million fund in March 2009). They finally quit.

So BuildOnline kept the employees on their books and they did subcontracting work for our company, Koral. In 2007 Salesforce.com wanted to buy Koral. He covered the topic again in June 2009 titled Invent, Invent, Invent. We had the consent of the acquiring company to take them yet US regulation prohibited it. Crazy, huh?

We were in closed beta for a while, and launched in August of 2009. How Ranker came about, is I love to make lists.
