He eventually founded and sold consumer health firm ViSalus to a public company and is now back making investments, in technology companies, as a venture capitalist here at Los Angeles-based HashtagOne (www.hashtagone.com). I'm a bit of an anti-VC, as you know. It was really the same business, but with less capital.

I’ve never met a founder who wasn’t acutely aware of his or her ticking time bomb and the sense that failure and humiliation is a real possibility. Also, make sure you know several partners at the VC firms who have invested in you because in tough times it helps to have very broad support. you can usually get a sense of things.

Your highest priority right now is hiring the 1 or 2 people that are going to join your company and make a difference. There’s you and your killer CTO co-founder. I need to take some VC meetings. I just don’t have enough time to focus on it right now. The business leaders need to do their parts.

So yes, I want to hire somebody with really high IQ and EQ but not somebody who is more knowledgeable at your specific skill set than you are. She’s protecting them from the most intellectually demanding activities. I thought you were supposed to be VCs? You know, ‘venture’ capitalists? Is it book smarts?
