Cloud computing is all the rage in the startup world these days. A typical definition (from Wikipedia) is that “cloud computing, is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand, like a public utility.”

Today, Google, and cloud computing companies more broadly, are doing to Microsoft what Microsoft did to IBM. Profits are moving up the value chain from on-device software to software-as-a-service in the cloud. This is manifesting as OS and software licensing revenues are shrinking as cloud-hosted SaaS apps are growing.

San Antonio —Cloud computing giant Rackspace has acquired a company that helps other businesses implement and use the Salesforce software. The deal expands Rackspace’s focus on helping companies use software and computing services, including those of previous competitors.

Perhaps in part due to its dominant market share, WebEx adopted telecom-style pricing, which effectively penalized their users. WebEx’s management was understandably hesitant to modify their pricing because the company’s shares were publically traded at the time we launched GoToMeeting (the company was subsequently purchased by Cisco).
