VCs should be more of a coach than proscriptively telling you what to do. Think of web vs. mobile. I think of VCs as coaches. But successful coaches find a way to get the most out of all the existing players on the field and avoid too much unnecessary trading. I call them “ VCs Seagulls.”

I have vanity urls setup at just about every site on the web. Lisa is an a skilled public speaking coach. Mike will be using a desk at Make It Work to incubate his new company. I’ve jumped on the bandwagon, big time! I love Namechk.com for this. Just this week I met @MarshaCollier, the author of over 25 books on eBay.

I’ve been engaged with social networking for some time now, starting with Myspace and Facebook and just recently (within the last 30 days), Twitter.

Capital efficient, web-based businesses should have a credible plan to self-sustainability. Our adVenture was located in an incubator, and as each Dot Bomb went up in flames, we purchased their office equipment (and sometimes even their office supplies) in conjunction with taking over their office space. However, do not count on it.

Recently I heard a talk by Dave McClure, a long-time angel investor, who also proclaims to be one of the “new breed” of venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, as CEO of 500Startups , which is either a micro-VC seed fund, or a startup incubator, or both. He is going gangbusters, and is now targeting a $50M second round of funding.

It’s also a very exciting time here in LA Tech with over 6 accelerators and incubators springing up over the past year. Tyler Crowley, of Sqweal, Launch, ThisWeekInStartups, Open Angel Forum, and Mahalo, stopped by to give a quick coaching session on pitch prep. Sunday morning rolled around and it was down to crunch-time.
