I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.

Because I am true to the hiring practices I preach, I wanted a strong exec who would “ punch above their weightclass ” by taking a job they hadn’t yet done but would hugely aspire to and thus work harder to out perform. In the same year they won Business Insider’s Startup competition. Nice sweep!

You can always tell during this discussion whether the entrepreneur has logged into their products, talked to their customers, read all the news stories and gotten all of the back channel info on the competition. You can tell if they have a deep-seated competitive spirit. Can’t go a mile deep on competition?

You’ll learn about competitive products that exist or are being built. I might also be concerned about taking my idea directly to a large, well funded competitor who is know for innovation. Startups that come to me and ask me to sign an NDA in order to get Free Startup CTO Consulting really are missing it.

He then hired a personal assistant who would read his emails for him, and then sort them by projects, and hand them to him presorted. That saved him hours of time every week, and so our inspiration was to replicate that experience without needing to hire an expensive assistant. Any funding yet? What are your backgrounds?
