Are you a non-technical startup founder who’s about to go have a conversation with a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) or Technical advisory type person? Maybe you are going for a reality check on your current situation - wondering if you have a Weak Development Team or a Startup Founder Developer Gap.

We had an interesting presentation at the LA CTO Forum by the CTO of a startup who chose Groovy / Grails as the framework for their startup. t prompted a good discussion around how CTOs go about choosing the programming language and framework for their startup. Of course, I'm not sure that anyone chooses Java alone.
they need a developer more than they need a CTO. What happens when you have a really good developer is that a gap exists where you may not ask the right questions to specify the right system, consider appropriate 3rd party technologies, etc. Developers rightly need a lot of detail to get at cost, timeline and impact.
Don't be fooled by a Common Misunderstanding in Agile SoftwareDevelopment. While You Are Building Your MVP Look for the following Symptoms of a Weak Development Team. Correct your course quickly. And when you have Poor SoftwareDevelopers - Pull the Plug Early.

Almost every day I'm talking to early stage startup founders (see Free Startup CTO Consulting Sessions ) about what they plan to do. I’ve talked before about initial conversations with founders and the questions I’m likely going to ask Startup SoftwareDevelopment – Do Your Homework Before You Develop Anything. And it will be a consistent picture provided both to the team (CTO, COO) and to investors. Part of those questions are around Startup Metrics.
When we interview potential developers, it’s amazing to me how many can’t answer questions that every student in a sophomore level computer science course should be able to answer. Developers are very quite when bugs, features, changes are being discussed and only come back with questions later. I used to teach this same stuff.
” or “Are you developing for desktop, tablet, mobile, or all three?” ” Of course, it’s more complicated than just checking boxes on a question list. The innovator/developer relationship needs to be a conversation. How big is the anticipated development team? How will it be structured?
Of course I don’t believe this argument. There is of course much nurture and culture weaved in. You’re not born into being a world-class softwaredeveloper. Of course you don’t have do be great at all 12 skills. But you can take data to say whatever you want to say by using it out of context.
