The new prize, which is being funded by the Massiah Foundation, will award $50,000 each year to the best, entrepreneurial plan and idea to come out of the USC Viterbi engineering school. The University of Southern California has been very visible in recent years for encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation.

Dave told us a bit more about the Viterbi Startup Garage and several other associated efforts there at USC centered around the startup ecosystem. The Startup Garage is an incubator which gives preference to USC teams, or startups that are USC affiliated in some way, for example, alumni-led. What is Viterbi Startup Garage?

One of the attributes of this prize, is that USC is going to also conduct a business plan preparation and entrepreneurship course for the students. The outside mentors can then help them in making projections, looking into their marketing and business development plans, and look at sales projections and organization.

Of course that’s not disputable. And while none has yet had the lasting power of the much bigger NorCal successes I imagine his next moves will continue to be closely watched by those in the know and the countless younger LA entrepreneurs who count Rosenblatt as a mentor may leave an even more lasting impact. Yes, Google won.

Trakfire : a platform that enables its community to curate the best music from emerging artists, the third company founded founded by 19 year old USC Iovine Young Academy sophomore Arjun Mehta. Each mentor spoke for nearly an hour to the entire group, answered questions, and sat with each company for one-on-one mentoring.
