I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?

I had a recent email dialog with the founder of a company looking for a CTO for their startup. We had several emails back and forth where he provided basic details on the concept. And I tried to evaluate the idea and figure out: What did the founder really need here? He needed some kind of CTO and as well Developers.

I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. When Ethan was considering leaving Google we talked about it. He was seeking $500k.

I reviewed an email from Kara Nortman, the CEO of Moonfrye who is working on putting together venture debt. I then traded emails with two former senior tech professionals in LA. And I spoke with the CTO of another great company I used to be on the board of and enlisted his support in potentially being an advisor to one company.
