I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?

I reviewed an email from Kara Nortman, the CEO of Moonfrye who is working on putting together venture debt. I then traded emails with two former senior tech professionals in LA. And I spoke with the CTO of another great company I used to be on the board of and enlisted his support in potentially being an advisor to one company.

Plus, he told us a little bit about how he's helping to build a mini cluster of technology companies in the Silverlake area. However Gmail is only private email conversations. We have some great mentors now. They'll reply to my emails in half an hour, and give us great feedback on what we're doing.

By the end of my sophomore year, I decided to go after this full time, and that's when I officially brought on a CTO, Shiv Prakash, and we went at it in the summer of 2011, and the rest is kind of history. Both have been great mentors ever since. We understand this whole effort was actually backed by Sir Richard Branson?
