For instance, validation that directly supports your company's underlying value proposition is more valuable than corroboration that indirectly suggests customers might ultimately adopt your solution.

A startup leader's primary responsibility is to maximize the return to its stakeholders, which include the company's global and local neighbors, employees, suppliers, customers and investors. A month from now it is unlikely that a supportive customer will drive across town to demonstrate their solidarity with the company.

If this is the case, offer to make a meaningful introduction to a potential customer or partner of one of their portfolio companies. For instance, you might propose a lead sharing relationship in which both companies trade customer introductions. Yes, I am advising you to sandbag your prospective investors.
