I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (ChiefTechnologyOfficer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. That’s why Roger Smith puts the focus of the CTO on programming for the earliest stage.
Almost every day I'm talking to early stage startup founders (see Free Startup CTOConsulting Sessions ) about what they plan to do. What are your key Startup Metrics ? How concerned are we about design for mobile? Analytics/Metrics - what are the key startup metrics that you will need to track?

I’ve worked with 30+ early-stage companies in all sorts of capacities (and spoken to many, many more), so I thought it might be worthwhile trying to classify the various ways that I’ve engaged in different technology roles in startups. Actually, David’s taking even broader roles than I generally do as he’s CEO for at least one startup.
Still, if you’re a business leader and your developers haven’t asked you these questions, look for a FractionalCTO to help navigate the critical early stage of development. What are your key Startup Metrics ? Analytics/Metrics What key startup metrics will you need to track? Graphic design?
they need a developer more than they need a CTO. What happens when you have a really good developer is that a gap exists where you may not ask the right questions to specify the right system, consider appropriate 3rd party technologies, etc. Provide the metrics you are trying to achieve.
He's the former CTO at Stocktwits, and he did the analysis and found out a lot of stuff. After refining their metrics even more, they doubled their performance, and then quadrupled it. He's the smartest guy, and not just book but also street smart, a superb designer and engineer, a great leader, and everyone loves him.
I asked some of the same questions I ask in my Free Startup CTOConsulting Sessions and then I get to a very common conversation: Me : Do you have specs? For example, if you are trying to determine viral coefficient (see Startup Metrics ), then the focus should be around those aspects of the MVP. Founder : Ummm.
Continuing my series of posts that I’ve been collecting that live at the intersection of Startups and being a Startup CTO : Startup CTO Top 30 Posts for April 16 Great Startup Posts from March here are the top posts from May 2010. it’s about measuring online influence and I’m big on metrics as a key element of business planning; 2.)
