Lime Retreats From San Diego

E-scooter company Lime is retreating from San Diego--as well as eleven other markets--in what appears to be a shift in the winds for the micro-mobility market startup world. Lime--which competes against such local startups as Bird and Wheels-- said that it is shutting down in "select communities throughout the world where micromobility has evolved more slowly".

Empirico Raises $17M, Inks 3-Year Antisense Collaboration with Ionis

Empirico, a biotech that has developed tools to analyze genomics data and use those insights to identify potential therapeutic targets, has signed a collaboration deal with antisense drug developer Ionis Pharmaceuticals that includes a $10 million equity investment. The 14-person startup, founded in 2017, has developed technology that it says uses big data sets, human genetic data, and advanced algorithms to find potential targets for drugs.

Los Angeles-based Quibi , the previously stealth-mode mobile video startup founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, said at CES that it has raised $400M in a funding round. The company--which unveiled a website and announced its plans to roll out 175 short form video series specificaly created for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices--was previously known as NewTV.

Whitmor/Wirenetics Acquired By BJG Electronics Group

Valencia-based Whitmor/Wirenetics , a value added manufacturer and distributor of wire and cable products for the aerospace, defense, space and industrial markets, has been acquired by BJG Electronics Group. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. BJG Electronics Group said the deal came alongside another acquisition, of Intro Corporation, a distributor of connectors, contacts and accessories to the commercial aviation and aerospace industry.

AI Startup Gets Win With Warner Bros. For Greenlighting Films

Los Angeles-based Cinelytic , a developer of artificial intelligence software, says it has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures International (WBPI), where Warner Bros. will use its AI-driven project management software. According to Cinelytic, the AI software will be used to help drive decision making as part of the greenlight process for film studios, and to inform decision making around content and talent valuation to support release strategies.
