On August 23rd, 2013 I had an email intro from my good friend and trusted source Jeff Berman who only sends me stuff when it is somebody he respects (ie a strong filter vs. those who send casual intros). Andrew & Petri posed a question to me, “If Walt Disney were starting his company today, what kind of company would he build?”

Today we’re in a world where 10 accelerators are bombarding you with emails to meet their 10-15 companies. Twitter, LinkedIn, Salesforce not to mention Disney, Warner, GM, P&G. And when the press releases and the attaboys wear off it still comes down to real work. Inbound is seldom differentiated dealflow.

We recently completed a pilot with William Morris and Disney, around Hannah Montana, where we helped print QR codes for 10,000 CD stickers, 2500 posters, and digital signage. When you scan those codes, you're able to see a trailer on your handset, and get an email to download a deleted scene. There's lots of grassroot adoption.

This accelerated after I co-led the seed & A rounds at Maker Studios, which sold 3 years later for $1 billion to Disney. Second, videos that we do share end up in fragments across Facebook, Instagram, cloud services, email or text messages. As a VC (especially based in LA), I see hundreds of video apps.
