Those programs--epitomized by YCombinator in the Bay Area, and TechStars in Boulder, Colorado--attract newly minted entrepreneurs with a mixture of cash and mentoring, and a program which rapidly takes ideas and turns them into viable, executing businesses. Those mentors are not just Bruce and I, although we are full time on this.

We have a number of locations, including one in Santa Monica, one in Pasadena, one in Downtown, and one in El Segundo and the South Bay Area. We think we're at the tip of the iceberg in the office-as-a-service concept. In Silicon Beach, and in Santa Monica, we've adapted to that community as far as staffing and circumstance.

To that end, last week, Los Angeles-based MuckerLab (www.muckerlab.com) announced its plans--and a big lineup of local CEO mentors--to start up a new, YCombinator- and TechStars-type program in Los Angeles, headed by former Silicon Valley venture capitalist Erik Rannala , and affiliated with the TechStars Network.

Invest more heavily in platform services. Move our offices to Santa Monica so we could be closer to the early-stage companies being created in LA. I created an accelerator & mentor network (Launchpad LA). Build out our junior staff including pulling through some younger professionals into the investment ranks.

Awareness Years ago Upfront Ventures rented out a movie theater of 350 people in Santa Monica to screen the movie, “ Code: Debugging the Gender Gap ,” an important movie by Robin Hauser and we invited senior members of many local tech firms to attend. Inclusion begets understanding, which in turn begets more comprehensive decisions.
