There is much discussion about this weekend’s article in the NY Times regarding Amazon’s work practices. For anybody who has never worked in a hard-charging environment I can see how this article portrays a unidimensional view of Amazon but it isn’t one I believe tells the complete story.

I talk about failure a lot because I think it can be tremendously instructive and I think that success without failure often masks underlying lessons. We champion a storyline about an underdog who failed many times but through grit and determination have risen above the odds.

Although I hear more and more about “global warming,” and the many ways we are destroying our environment, I still don’t see many global business winners in this space, comparable to Facebook and Amazon. Choose Energy, and others highlighted in this recent Investopedia article. The percentage is even lower in many other countries.

I find it amusing when a journalist writes an article about a prominent startup (either privately held or preparing for an IPO) and decries that, “They’re not even profitable!” I know this seems obvious but I promise you that even smart people forget this when talking about profitability. I agree with the seven survival challenges from Michael Fertik, in an old Harvard Business Review article , for executives making the transition: Empire-building skills are counter-productive. At a small company, if you''re constantly demanding more support, you risk turning your net impact into overhead-creep rather than value creation.
