The idea in 2011 was to create a space at what was then Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical research and development facility in San Diego for an “innovation center,” a place where 18 to 20 life sciences startups could incubate, replete with lab space and equipment.

We had over 30 pitches and classic SUW team voting that followed, resulting in the final 12 most popular ideas. Also of note was Ryan Orrico’s launch of HandJob, a new form of job applicant screening and referral tracking. With the pitching energy escalating in the room, regular pitches began short after.

The idea was to feature early stage companies in the region that have not attracted much attention or raised a substantial amount of startup capital. I started with a list of companies already screened by the San Diego Venture Group’s annual venture summit, and consulted with investors and startup mentors to refine the list.

And it certainly seems to have worked with reports of: Branchout has seen explosive growth in January 2011, growing from 10K to 250K monthly users, with a total usership now in the hundreds of thousands. I have no idea how it chose these friends. That's impressive growth! How did they do it? More on this below.

Is there a screening process or criteria for firms to use the facilities? They screen and score companies based on their application, and if that looks good, they come in for a face-to-face interview. We though that because of the demographic and the excitement level, that would be a great idea. That's earlier than at the UTC.
