Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a webdeveloper in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles webdeveloper, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” And he’s right there’s a big difference.

Steve Gilison worked as a market researcher and product manager at a startup where my company, TechEmpower , did the software / webdevelopment. I have about 11 years in the technology sector including roles doing market research, sales and product development. My focus has been marketing strategy and product development.
A few years ago, my CTO spotted a need that local groups and organizations have in handling RSVPs and registrations for meetings and events. I also write about holding events ( [link] ), and I’m writing a series about integrating marketing strategy with marketing tactics ( [link] ). I've been following both of your blogs for a while.
Evening events in Orange County require about 2 hours of round trip drive time. It has to be a pretty good event for it to be worth attending. Some events, like a recent Tech Coast Angel event at UCLA are really worth it. But some events you dont get quality attendees and then its a drag to drive that far.

Unlike many viral marketing events, the company''s latest guerilla marketing stunt was not luck. As noted in Hacking Hacker News , the company previously dominated the mindshare of the webdevelopment community by facilitating the spread of a random posting on Hacker News. We didn''t ask people to tweet it, they just did.

What I mentioned in Events and Networking in Los Angeles was that its somewhat hard in LA to count on networking events to build networks. He is a frequent speaker at industry and academic events. Thats right on the money. The articles I cited there around finding co-founders suggests that Ben is on the money.

Although the exact sequence of events is a bit unclear, it appears that Hacker News user "lukethomas"(who is unaffiliated with Divshot) was prompted to create the Hacker News post after reading a tweet about the initiation of the company's private beta. According to Michael, the Hacker News exposure was completely unplanned.
