I recently had the pleasure of spending an hour with Jon Steinberg, president of Buzzfeed , a company who focuses on helping media companies make their content go viral. That’s why people turn up to Buzzfeed. His words, “we find things on Sunday morning that will be on the Today show on Tuesday morning.&#
It an era of social media and newsreaders titles matter a lot. So I need to stand out in two areas in which I compete for attention – social media and news readers. The three must reads for me daily are: The NY Times, TechMeme & Media Redefined. data has confirmed it and BuzzFeed has built an entire business around it!
Usually I tell them to study Upworthy & Buzzfeed. When they get your email they earn the right to share more videos with you in the future and they already know something about your interests. And if they can’t get you to give up your email address they will encourage you to share the video on Facebook or Twitter.
And if you’re paying attention, you’ll understand that this is their third push for native media consumption: first photos, then videos, and now written content. For all those who want to talk about the fragmentation of media and the models for journalism is in trouble; it’s actually not. Design, photography, tech, any sort of media broadcast, any kind of contracted workforce, we expect to be there and help. Where do you think printed media is heading? Digital media?
The fourth part is “ discover ” and this is the professional media part of Snapchat that you barely knew existed but your younger peers certainly know about. It has Vice, Tastemade, Vox, ESPN, Comedy Central, BuzzFeed and more. Now you’re watching Snapchat media videos that you barely knew even existed.
It conjures up a range of emotions anytime I’ve privately expressed my opinion to thought leaders in our industry that I believe it is one of the most innovative companies in digital media. Some, of course, agree with me that BuzzFeed has been and continues to be the gold standard innovator in digital media to emulate.
