He was a life-long entrepreneur and the first business he created out of college (actually, he founded it while he was at Caltech) was a company that manufactured high quality audio speakers. Too many entrepreneurs focus on dilution. He sold so many that after Caltech he decided to open a retail store.
He has a really interesting background as a product manager and now an entrepreneur. On the one hand, an entrepreneur should not be overly paranoid and should know the ropes that VCs and other professional investors generally will not sign NDAs to see the concept or a prototype--and even if they did, it would not provide much protection.
How is this different than accelerator or incubator? David Carter: There is a lot of misunderstanding on what an incubator is, and what an accelerator is. When I was at Amplify, we had a lot of people wondering what an accelerator was, and how we differentiated from an incubator. Entrepreneurs should seek those people out.

Elementary Robotics was co-founded by Bill Gross, the brains behind an increasingly resurgent Idealab incubator, and Arye Barnehama, a former head of design at the augmented reality startup DAQRI. “Los Angeles is a great place for this, because we have a close relationship with Caltech and JPL,” according to Gross.
I then became and EIR at UC San Diego, and joined EvoNexus, the not-for-profit incubator run by the Irvine Company. It's a casual setupit's not an incubator, it's not an accelerator, and we're not charging anyone for space. The other reason for building it, is LA is crapped on all the time from a press perspective and entrepreneur perspective. I have been able to work closer with my entrepreneurs, as well as closer with other incubators and accelerators than would have been the case. Caltech and UCLA are now equidistant from CU Boulder and MIT, and that has been a surprising benefit. What was the biggest lesson you learned this year?
