The good news is that recent big company financial woes and layoffs have generated a flood of candidates with real experience seeking positions at startups. They are not the ones you need in the few key team positions to drive your startup. Practice an “up or out” growth policy to prevent role stagnation.

I’m not talking about academic classes, because at best these only teach you how to learn. A question I sometimes get from startup founders is “What do I talk to these guys about?” Most successful entrepreneurs have been written up on the Internet, or in magazines, or books. Just start a business. Adopt a mentor.

However, off-the-shelf majors are typically not suited to the eclectic skills required to succeed in the startup world. When I arrived at Wharton many moons ago, I was told that all first-year students take the same set of Core classes. Like a sheepeople, I dutifully signed up for the required classes.
