As a business advisor and investor in new startups, I see how difficult it is to make any process work, no matter how well designed, if the team is dysfunctional. Priority is placed on employee mentoring and coaching. On the other hand, I see teams with almost no process that are tremendously productive.

I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. In the same year they won Business Insider’s Startup competition. I think it’s a beautifully designed site and product. The company was called Red Beacon. I was standing with him when he won the TechCrunch 50 award. Nice sweep! So there you have it.

I was, however, very competitive when I was young, and had played football in high school well enough to get scholarship offers from what would be called division 1 schools in today’s world. These were sports that you taught yourself by watching others, and just pushed yourself to progress for fun, with no coach or parent influencing you.

It's trying to determine if there is a viable way to go to market, and also deal with competitive issues. Where is this talent coming from? I faced the same challenge not being able to form a team because most people joined the competition with friends that they had already planned on working with. It was a wonderful feeling to win in a competition for the 3 rd time in a row, but much more rewarding that finally it was for my idea, creating something from my vision.
