For a software startup, a patent can be the intellectual property providing the key competitive advantage, or it can be an expensive non-defensible bureaucratic nightmare -- or both. Some argue to simply eliminate software patents, while others put their hopes in U.S. That’s more than a lifetime in today’s technology.

We actually have a very big Wordpress user base, because of the work we''ve done with Wordpress, contributing code and integrating them into our platform. We saw early on that the cloud as we know it today--utility services, software, and so on--was an entry point to do that, including with hosting. So, for us, competition is good.

I often hear the qualms of business-smart but non-technical entrepreneurs, wondering if they really have a chance in this high-technology marketplace. I tell them that if their idea or solution is technology intensive, they clearly need technology strength on the team. It definitely works, but may be beyond your budget.

We spent time out in the marketplace talking with customers, looking at their solutions, comparing ourselves with our competition and then squirreling ourselves away in our offices designing our next set of features. But he didn’t grow up with technology. The Outside In organization had a one-way flow. He’s a smart guy.
