I have discussed in this series a number of books and games parents can share with their children which will cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset. Amarillo’s advice is consistent with my comments in the Startup Competition ; get to know your competitors on a personal basis, while appearing as innocuous as possible.

We are also launching beverages and coffee, two new categories, next month. With brands today, as you probably know, every consumer category is being massively disrupted by the long tail. There are so many more brands and competition. What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs, looking to start their own business?

At the Technovation Challenge LA Pitch Night hosted by Iridescent , we saw six teams of high school girls from various Los Angeles City Schools pitch a number of mobile app ideas to a panel of venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. Seek out similar academic competitions and programs. Don’t take no for an answer. Find a hero.

In this yearly event put on by the Stevens Center for Innovation , 30 teams, selected from a pool of 70 applicants, presented their unique ideas to crowds of students, parents, and judges. This event was a competition, and judges began making their rounds around noon. The winners were then announced and handed large cardboard checks.

There was a real opportunity for me to arbitrage the last decade and a half of my experience in the Internet, and apply that to a products company, and to get some real competitive advantage. Having a strong presence online and strong, positive word of mouth in a relevant audience is a real competitive advantage.

I would say my wife & I are on the “non neurotic&# side of parents. I was saying that I was happy it was all out in the open because I felt at least everybody could now understand the issues & opportunities from the perspectives of angels, entrepreneurs and VCs. We talk about all of this in the video.
