I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. Ethan had pointed out to me that merchants were being barraged by “deal site” wanting to drive customers in the door but they didn’t have great tools to manage their customers. The company was called Red Beacon.
The program is basically to take entrepreneurs, pair them with a mentor who is also an entrepreneur themselves, either a CEO or a CTO. It's structured so that they get funding, office space, all of the Internet resources, tools they need from mentors. There might be one or two mentors, one might be a CTO, another, a CEO.
Many startups now go through accelerators and have mentors passing through each day with advice – usually it’s conflicting. On sales I often talk about “ Why Buy Anything, Why Buy Now, Why Buy Me ” as a tool to think about a sales process. Everybody has a blog these days and there is much advice to be had.
That's funding our new product, FanMix, which is a a social media tool. If you're like many people, you're having more and more public conversations, but there is no tool out there similar to Gmail which a lot of people use to organize their whole life. Ultimately, we're build tools for marketers on top of that.
But, there are no big tools out there to see what is going on. Most of the popular tools people use were written ten years ago, when the advertising space was completely different. I met my co-founder and CTO, Tom, there, and worked on a bunch of projects together. I moved to Microsoft and was there for six and a half years.

Scott Ferreira: MySocialCloud helps user manage their online life, through three tools. By the end of my sophomore year, I decided to go after this full time, and that's when I officially brought on a CTO, Shiv Prakash, and we went at it in the summer of 2011, and the rest is kind of history. Both have been great mentors ever since.
Since then, I have worked extensively with mentoring youth, and helping them figure out what's possible in terms of careers. He has three daughters, and this really was in the wheelhouse of how this tool could help them. We want to be a democratically accessible tool, so we don't charge the users. That's what we wanted to do.
