Tuesday, October 11, 2011 -- Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator Launch Event. The City of Los Angeles is launching its new cleantech business incubator to accelerate the development of cleantech start-ups and to help build a stronger green economy in LA.
The group said that the winners with Stanford Nitrogen Group , Greenbiotics , and Xite Solar will split the $200,000 in prize money, and also will gain access to the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. Hawaiian firm eHale also was given a promising idea award for integrating solar cells into indoor and outdoor, home and office furniture.
Los Angeles-based Tilofy (www.tilofy.com)--out of USC''s Viterbi Startup Garage--is doing just that, helping to highlight what is going on around you, by absorbing all of that location data out there at any particular time and place. My degree is from USC in big data. As you probably know, Viterbi is the engineering school at USC.
The new group, The Tech CEO Network , said it is looking to help bridge between the technology present at local schools like Caltech, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, and other universities, and actual, viable companies. The founders of the group, Richard Koffler and John Morris , are two well known investors in the Los Angeles area.
Internally, we look very similar to a tech company, in that we have a development team, go-to-market team, and product people, and the ultimate goal of what we want to accomplish is to create companies that can run independently, with their own management teams. How is this different than accelerator or incubator?
When we arrived at USC, we began to talk about how we struggled during the recruiting process. Our coaches did not have relationships, and I ended up walking onto the USC baseball team, and Kai ended up walking onto their club lacrosse team. Form there, we got interest from incubators, angel investors, and venture capital.
For example, we had a keynote from Patrick Soon-Shiong, who talked about his new health incubator, and Frank Addante, at Rubicon Project, talking his ad-tech services. In fact, this conference connects people who might not have met, it might connect a designer with a bizdev person with a developer.
In order to support all of these teams, there are several on-campus startup competitions every year, from the Silicon Beach USC competition to the New Venture Seed Competition, with prize funds to help build the companies. The University of Southern California is home to many innovative students and companies.
The best person I know to talk about the growing entrepreneurship culture on campuses is Alex Zhang, a student at USC and the Managing Director of the student-run incubator LavaLab. The USC Entrepreneur Club and the Kairos Society brought Howard Marks , a successful entrepreneur and founder and CEO of StartEngine , on campus to speak about his past experiences. When you go to USC, you don’t need a job. We were going to be interviewing with Howard Marks for his incubator, StartEngine, in the morning.
I then became and EIR at UC San Diego, and joined EvoNexus, the not-for-profit incubator run by the Irvine Company. So, despite their rivalries and silos, people have come together, and we now have all 5 UC campuses in Southern California, plus Caltech, Harvey Mudd, USC, UC San Diego, and others involved. It's a phenomenal place.
After two years, Alfred Mann decided to give money to USC for the effort instead. This is really also funded because of Mike and my other project, the 101 incubator. We thought we could deliver that 3D image as a software-as-a-service. Unfortunately, UCLA''s money dried up due to legal issues. How are you funding this project?
