We had such a great response from July’s TZ Tech Crawl Silicon Beach Santa Monica edition, that we decided to get another one in before the summer was out and this time focus around the Venice area. Where: Venice, CA (Silicon Beach!). It’s like a bar crawl, but with startup/Accelerator/Incubator offices instead of bars.

For example, we had a keynote from Patrick Soon-Shiong, who talked about his new health incubator, and Frank Addante, at Rubicon Project, talking his ad-tech services. The third thing, is it''s not just Santa Monica and Venice. We have Chet Pipkin, talking about Belkin. But, we also have this other stuff too.

Venice-based Amplify LA (www.amplify.la) is celebrating its fifth anniversary as a startup accelerator here in the Los Angeles area � one of the few in the area to have survived in more or less original form after the launch of a number of startup incubators and accelerators five years ago.

Venice-based Zefr (www.zefr.com) got its start in the content world--licensing movie clips and posting them online--but soon, figured out there was a whole different opportunity in developing software tools to understand exactly what was happening on YouTube. But, that was a signal to us.

And it is one of the reasons that NYC is developing a vibrant technology community. These days it’s Santa Monica and Venice. So we’ve seen an explosion in the number of startup companies and subsequently a huge burst in the number of incubators. I’m sure there’s a lot of truth to that.

In March of last year, Matt Jacobson, head of market development at Facebook, paid $10.9 The narrow, 3-mile strip of land that runs from Santa Monica through Venice, and is now stretching down to Playa Vista, has been dubbed "Silicon Beach" due to the heavy concentration of Internet companies and executives there.
