Independa ($5M, San Diego, software for senior independence). In the latest roundup of fundings (big few weeks for San Diego, apparently): PatientSafe Solutions ($20M, San Diego, mobile health). Gradient X is backed by Rincon Venture Partners, GRPPartners (now Upfront Ventures), CrossCut Ventures, Founder Collective, Siemer Ventures, Baroda Ventures, and Double M Partners. Michael Lum: We were all semi-independently looking at mobile, due to the growth projection and potential there. What is Gradient X?
This was in large part due to the marketing efforts of Jason that created a great top end of the funnel (100+ companies applied) and the herculean efforts of Tyler Crowley who spent days going through all of the submissions and serving up 5 very interesting companies. My personal favorite and best fit for GRPPartners was Thumbtack.
Santa Monica-based Zag.com , the online car buying software firm headed by Scott Painter, announced this morning that it has inked a deal with the AAA, to power a new service called AAA Automaker. Zag is venture backed by Anthem Venture Partners, USAA, GRPPartners, Arcturus Capital, Callaway Cars and the Skoll Fund.
Some wait 5-7 years but usually this is because it’s proving more difficult to raise a new fund due to market conditions or the lack of returns in their current fund. For example, my firm, GRPPartners, has a $200 million fund that was closed in March 2009 and we have 4 investment partners.
side note: our last fund at GRPPartners is currently ranked as the 5th best performing fund of the year 2000. You don’t need to buy expensive software – there are free open source solutions for nearly everything. VC will shrink. Oh yes it will. The top quartile funds have performed well.
I’m very pleased today to announce that I invested, on behalf of GRPPartners, in Burstly alongside Rincon Venture Partners , an early stage VC in Southern California whith whom we love to work (and were our co-investors on RingRevenue ). What does it do? it has built in iPad support from Day 1.
My firm GRPPartners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly Wordpress), video (YouTube), pictures (Flickr), review sites (Yelp) and collaborative content (Wikipedia). A healthy eco-system of application developers is required for any software or Internet company to be massively successful.
It’s like people arguing that there’s a beautiful beach house in 2006 that represents great long-term value due to scarcity of similar property. I remember in the late 90′s trying to charge fair prices for software when my well-financed competitors were giving things away for free.
In no expert in Seattle but when I look around I see: enterprise software (Microsoft), the market leader in cloud services (Amazon AWS), games (Xbox), some of the most innovative retailers in the country (CostCo, Starbucks, REI) and what is left of Boeing (HQ moved to Chicago). It’s great to see an initiative like Seattle 2.0
