Starting in 2009 I began writing checks consistently, year-in and year-out. I admit that my writing style back then was a bit more carefree, provocative and opinionated.

Based on my own experience as a mentor and angel investor, I find that as many as ninety percent of startups fail in the first five years, despite their best efforts. It helps to advertise your new presence with a grand opening, viral video, and traditional advertising to highlight entry into the arena.

Create a written plan, with target milestones and metrics. I have found that the process of writing down your idea, with a plan for implementation, and reviewing that plan with a business advisor, will force you to learn and acknowledge the real requirements for implementation. The number is much higher for those who choose to go it alone, without help. There are lots of resources available for the challenge of that activity, including the Internet and mentors like me. Writing down key parameters will force you solidify the specifics, and mentally commit to them.
