Los Angeles-based web hosting and cloud services firm Media Temple has tapped two technology vets as President and COO, and Chief Technology Officer, the company announced this morning. We had to buy Oracle database licenses, UNIX servers, a Sun Solaris operating system, web servers, load balancers, EMC storage, disk mirrors for redundancy and had to commit to a year-long hosting agreement at places such as Exodus. Linux (instead of UNIX), Apache (web server software), MySQL (instead of Oracle) and PHP.

To build applications we needed databases (Oracle), browsers (Netscape), servers (Sun Microsystems), storage (EMC), security (Semantic), application servers (Apache), caching software, load balancers, hosting facilities, programming languages and methods, CDNs, DSL equipment, Wifi routers and so forth.

Douglas has also served at Oracle. Welch joins from Experian Interactive Media, and prior to that was at LowerMyBills.com before it was acquired by Experian. Rubicon Project develops technology used to optimize advertising revenues for web publishers.

First, I believe that Seesmic has an excellent product – especially the web version of their product and that having another senior and experienced exec like Loic Le Meur would be great for Twitter. Often these were things that would make Salesforce more competitive vis-a-vis Oracle and Microsoft.

One of the firms launching this week there is Los Angeles-based NativeTung (www.nativetung.com), which is developing tools to help web sites translate and create multilingual versions of their sites.
