2009 has been the worst year for M&A in a decade. Projected IPOs for 2009 are an embarrassing 10 total deals, down from 86 just 2 years ago (it was 265 in the go-go years of 99-00) but at least up from 6 in 2008. A recent example would be Compuware’s $295 million acquisition of Gomez , a networking monitoring company.

There were barely network applications at the time. We built the first, networkable contact management product, Goldmine, to run on top of Novell. Microsoft didn't have a network OS, until Novell built a market for it, and ate Novell with NT Server. Businesses were hooking up their PCs with things like Novell. Explain that?

It's an extremely valuable service, and we're paid through various commercial relationships--Google AdSense, major affiliate networks, or direct relationships with individual brands and retailers.
